Maharishi Valmiki is one of the major sages of Sanatan Dharma and Ramayana, the major epic of Hinduism, was composed by him. According to mythology, he was born on Sharad Purnima of Ashwin month. It is also known from these mythology that before becoming Maharishi, his name was Ratnakar.


 The Sharad Purnima day of Ashwin is celebrated as Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti every year due to the special contribution he has made by composing various Hindu scriptures and Puranas.

According to the stories, Valmiki was named Ratnakar before becoming Maharishi and he was a bandit. Once when he encountered Narada Muni and hearing his words, Ratnakar's eyes opened and he adopted the path of truth and religion.
